 | | About The Group | | Church Lawford & King's Newnham Footpaths Group, made up of volunteers from the two parishes with an interest in walking, is, on behalf of CL Parish Council & KN Parish Meeting, working with the County Council's community paths officers in carrying out work under the scheme. The Group, formed in 1997, began work by conducting surveys to determine the condition of all of the rights of way within the two parishes; after which a programme of work was drawn up detailing the tasks which were required to be carried out to restore the paths to a satisfactory condition. Initially a contractor was employed to carry out the restorative work. Later tools were purchased to enable the group to perform the tasks themselves and in this way the grant money has been made to go further. |

 | | Latest News | The Group has made the following improvements to footpath furniture in the last year: -
1). Installed a pedestrian gate on footpath R117 in King’s Newnham at the north end of the footbridge over the Avon. 2). Installed a kissing gate on footpath R117 in King’s Newnham just north of the old mill (to replace an old ‘leaning’ stile). 3). Installed a 2-in-1 ‘Bristol’ gate on footpath R119. 4). Installed a 2-in-1 ‘Bristol’ gate on footpath R117 at the north side of the bridge carrying the main London / Birmingham railway line.
Most of the furniture on our paths network is now to a good standard and consequently there are fewer further improvements that we are able to make. Nevertheless, there is still some work to be done: one or two stiles to be replaced with kissing gates for example, but this will only be done when the condition of the stiles justifies their replacement. Other issues, such as the re-instatement of footpaths not presently available for use, are being addressed by WCC’s Countryside Recreation office in Warwick.
Church Lawford & King’s Newnham’s ‘Day of Walks 2008’ was held on Sunday 10th August – a total of 22 people (and 4 dogs) took part. Walkers assembled on The Green, Church Lawford, at 2-00pm in readiness for the event. Although four guided walks were on offer, ranging from 3 to 6 miles in length, participants divided into two groups for each of two 6 mile walks: 1). Church Lawford / Long Lawford / Newbold Tunnel / Cathiron / King’s Newnham, and 2). Church Lawford / King’s Newnham / Harborough Magna / Easenhall / King’s Newnham. Showers and a fresh wind during the morning did not auger well for the afternoon weather, however, each group had to endure only one short sharp mid-walk shower – clothes soon drying out in the sunshine afterwards. Showers remained a constant threat during the barbecue in a Group member’s garden after the walks. It stayed dry but a fresh breeze persisted throughout the afternoon and into the early evening (diners were frequently seen chasing lettuce leaves blown off their plates!). Eventually even the hardiest decided to retire indoors for dessert to finish proceedings. |
